Janelle Day, MS Science Teacher
The importance of relatability
Laura Martinez, Staff Writer
Middle School Science Teacher Janelle Day has always loved science. She also has always loved sports.
During her university years, Janelle found a path that combined both of her passions, kinesiology, the study of human movement and human anatomy.
“I was super interested in the combination of science and sport,” she said.
Janelle’s fascination with science blossomed when she participated in a science co-op in high school, shadowing medical professionals at a hospital.
Her love for sports began in childhood. By her teenage years, she was playing soccer and volleyball competitively.
While balancing medical studies and soccer at St. Francis Xavier University in Canada, Janelle's involvement in coaching sports ignited a passion for teaching.
Janelle went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in kinesiology with minors in biology and French and a Bachelor of Education. What she loved most about her major was how much it applies to everyday life.
“I had really good teachers and professors and everything was engaging and exciting,” she said. “It is fascinating to me because when you study the human body, everything is relatable.”
As a teacher, Janelle focuses on finding authentic connections between the subject and her students’ lives.
“It helps when you’re interested in the topics that you’re learning,” she said. “I always try to find the thing that is going to illuminate whatever topic we are learning.”
What Janelle loves about science:I love science. It’s loads of fun, and there’s so much you can do with it. The coolest part about science is that it’s always changing. We think we know something, and then a year later, we learn this totally new thing. The fact that science is not static keeps things exciting. |
