In March 2021, the Graded Learning Lab launched an innovative faculty learning experience. The school's Deeper Learning Foundations course provides faculty with the skills to draw upon science of learning research in order to reexamine curricula, student learning experiences, professional approaches, and best practices.
High School English Teacher Mary Davenport participated in the pilot course. Subsequently, she modified her writing instruction practice to encourage students to use "their unique voices and approaches to writing—rather than my prescriptive and limiting expectations." This approach led to her students taking ownership of their own learning. "There is no deep learning without ownership," Mary says.
Mary recently wrote about her transformative experience in an article in Edutopia. Click here to read the full article and learn how she is applying deeper learning practices in her English classes to foster mastery in writing.
