Learning Valuable Lessons through Sports

By Pedro K., '27

This student article was featured in Graded's 2024-25 yearbook, Every Second Counts.

“Every Second Counts” is a phrase that truly represents Graded. It resonates deeply with our student-athletes, who understand the significance of every moment spent training, competing, and growing at Graded. It encapsulates dedication, hard work, and Graded’s winning sports legacy.

Take Caike J., a tenth grader who has played soccer and futsal at Graded since eighth grade. Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “When I won Little 10 after months of hard work, I realized that every second of training counted, and our achievement contributed to Graded’s history.” Caike’s words embody the relentless effort and time invested in every practice, match, and tournament. For him, every second of preparation wasn’t just a step toward victory but a moment that became cemented in the school's history, shaping both individual and team legacies.

Similarly, Valentina L., a Graded athlete for eight years and who has also been captain of the JV soccer and futsal teams, echoes this feeling: “I’ve been participating in Graded Athletics since fourth grade, and the bonds I've created are the best part of my entire experience.” For Valentina, the value of time goes beyond competition—it is also found in the relationships and memories that have shaped her as an athlete and an individual. Every second on the soccer field or the futsal court has been an opportunity for growth, not just in terms of skills but also in building connections and character.

Tobias M. highlights the discipline that comes with being a dedicated athlete. Having started his journey in Graded Athletics as an Eaglet in fourth grade, he reflects, “Discipline is going to every practice, giving your best effort in every game, and reaping the rewards of hard work.” For Tobias, each second spent training or competing is part of a larger commitment to excellence—a testament to the long hours that lead to growth and success.

As a coach, Ricardo Paraventi offers a different perspective on the idea that every second counts. “This is my seventh year with Graded Athletics. Every second I spend coaching and working with student-athletes, I am constantly learning. What impacts me the most is seeing them develop not only as players but as people.” For Coach Paraventi, every second spent with his athletes extends beyond developing their physical abilities—it's ultimately about shaping them into well-rounded individuals.

Graded Athletics is more than just a place to improve sports skills; it's where student-athletes learn valuable, life-long lessons. From the sweat poured into every practice to the lessons learned from both victories and defeats, each second has contributed to their growth—not just as athletes, but as individuals. This year’s yearbook theme highlights the significance of time—the time spent building bonds, honing skills, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. In Graded Athletics, every second truly counts.
