IB Economics Students Learn about the Plano Real with Guest Speaker Pérsio Arida
Graded IB BrSS students had the unique opportunity to learn from economist Pérsio Arida as part of their study of the 30th anniversary of the Brazilian Plano Real earlier in the semester. Our students invited Mr. Arida, who played a pivotal role in the creation and implementation of the Plano Real, to visit campus and share his insights.
A former president of both the Central Bank of Brazil and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Mr. Arida explained the process that led to the creation of the Real—the currency used in Brazil to this day—and the stabilization of the Brazilian economy. He emphasized the importance of public trust in the success of the plan, which drastically reduced inflation rates.
Students actively participated in a Q&A session, asking Mr. Arida questions about his experience with the Plano Real, its long-term impact, and his perspective on current economic challenges and policies.
