Grade 8 Genetics Unit Combines Science and Creative Writing

Grade 8 science students concluded their genetics unit with an interdisciplinary project that combined science and creative writing.

The project invited students to write either a creative nonfiction or science fiction story rooted in real genetics concepts. Drawing on their understanding of DNA, genes, inheritance, and mutation, they were challenged to apply scientific ideas accurately while exploring the human, ethical, and social dimensions of genetics. Topics ranged from colorblindness and hemophilia to Alzheimer’s, genetic engineering, mutation, and imagined futures shaped by bioengineering.

Students moved beyond learning definitions to demonstrate conceptual understanding—using scientific vocabulary in context, grounding their narratives in research, and citing reliable sources. By connecting cause and effect, structure and function, and emerging technologies to lived experience and ethical questions, they showed how scientific knowledge can be transferred to new and creative contexts.

The unit culminated with student readings in the Haddad Center for the Performing Arts, where students shared excerpts of their work with peers. By communicating their learning to an authentic audience, students experienced what it means to engage deeply with content, think critically, and use creativity to make complex ideas accessible and meaningful.
