Fun Kids' Science: From Investigation to Inspiration

What happens when scientific discovery meets creativity and mentorship? Grade 11 students learned through the Fun Kids' Science project, where they took on the roles of scientists and science communicators.

As the culminating project for the Integrated Science Systems (ISS) course, students selected a child-friendly experiment—from bath bombs and lava lamps to fruit batteries and chromatography—and designed their own scientific investigations. They manipulated variables, collected and analyzed quantitative data, and drew evidence-based conclusions while following scientific reporting practices inspired by IB and NGSS standards.

But the learning didn't end in the lab. After completing their investigations, students translated their findings for a younger audience by creating simplified experiments using household materials, complete with instructional diagrams and demonstration videos.

Each student also developed an interactive digital science book for grade 4 learners, combining scientific explanations with visuals, videos, results, and engaging activities to make complex concepts accessible and fun.

The project culminated in hands-on workshops where grade 11 students worked directly with small groups of grade 4 students, guiding them through experiments, answering questions, and encouraging curiosity through inquiry-based learning.

By combining scientific investigation, digital design, communication, creativity, and leadership, the Fun Kids' Science project challenged students not only to deepen their own understanding of science but also to inspire the next generation of young scientists.
