Off the Shelf: Book Recommendations - September 2022

September 7, 2022 marked Brazil's bicentennial independence celebration. At Graded, the date was recognized in a myriad of ways. The PTA decorated the school with Brazilian flags and provided delicious treats for the entire community. A Brazilian Modern Art exhibition was displayed in the Student Center, and the community also wore Brazilian colors and patterns. Additionally, the cafeteria offered tasty Brazilian-themed lunch menus throughout this special week of celebration.

Middle School Interim Brazilian Social Studies Teacher Rodolfo Santos reminded students, as they gathered in an assembly to celebrate Brazilian Independence Day, of the importance of this holiday. Here is an excerpt from his speech:

“The 7th of September is a reminder of how important it is to have the courage to fight for citizenship and freedom. We should celebrate the date and reflect about it at the same time.

It is important to learn the meaning of independence. The independence of Brazil is a reminder for us to understand that we are still overcoming many things that hold us back as we continue building our country.”
