Family Literacy 

At Graded, we provide a literacy rich environment: We want children immersed in literature and we want them to develop a love of literature. When children love literature, they become literate members of the community, reading and writing daily to enhance their learning and their lives. Children who love to read, read more and learn more. They increase their knowledge base in all areas and develop rich vocabularies. 

Literacy encompasses more than just alphabetization. Alphabetization is the process of learning the written code of language, associating sounds with symbols. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as "the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society."

Developing a literacy rich environment is important not only in the school setting but also at home. Literacy development begins at birth. Parents sing songs, cite nursery rhymes and tell stories to their chidren which develops oral language skills. Oral language skills are the keystone upon which literacy begins. Children must understand how language works and playing with language helps children to learn essential phonemic awareness skills (sounds that make up words), develop vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.

Letramento em Família

A Escola Graduada tem o compromisso de oferecer a seus alunos um ambiente altamente letrado, onde nossos alunos possam "mergulhar" na literatura, desenvolvendo assim um amor pela arte das palavras. Quando as crianças gostam realmente de ler, tornam-se membros letrados de uma comunidade. Quem gosta de ler, lê sempre mais, além de aumentar e transferir o que sabe para todas as áreas do conhecimento humano.

O Letramento ultrapassa a alfabetização, ou seja, alfabetizado é aquele indivíduo que sabe ler e escrever; letrado é aquele que não só sabe ler e escrever, mas que responde adequadamente às demandas sociais da leitura e da escrita. Letrar significa colocar a criança no mundo letrado, trabalhando com os distintos usos de escrita na sociedade. Essa inclusão começa muito antes da alfabetização, quando a criança começa a interagir socialmente com as práticas de letramento no seu mundo social. Para Magda Soares, "letramento não significa apenas saber ler e escrever (atributo da alfabetização), mas fazer uso competente e freqüente da leitura e da escrita no mundo social".

O desenvolvimento de um ambiente letrado dá-se não somente na escola, mas também em casa. Desde a primeira infância, os pais podem contar histórias, cantar cantigas folclóricas, recitar parlendas, entre outras atividades que desenvolverão as habilidades orais da criança. O trabalho com a oralidade é a chave para o letramento. É importante que as crianças entendam o funcionamento da língua, pois é por meio de "jogos e brincadeiras" que envolvam a linguagem que a consciência fonológica, assim como as estratégias de leitura e escrita acontecerão.
